Firebird and Trans Am Day at the Pontiac Museum

Ken Pitcher

What a fun and fantastic time we had in Pontiac, Illinois again this year, as we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Firebird, at the 3rd Annual All Firebird and Trans Am Day at the Pontiac Museum in Pontiac, Illinois!

This event is co-sponsored by Midwest Firebirds and the Pontiac-Oakland Automobile Museum. All proceeds from the event go to help the museum continue their great work promoting the legacy of the Pontiac Motor Division of General Motors and the Oakland Motor Car Company, which produced cars from 1908 to 1931 and then became Pontiac Motor Car Company in 1932. I am ecstatic to report we had 85 Firebirds and many more people at the event, and were able to generate over $4,300 to the museum’s bottom line! As Penny Dye from the Museum told us: “That’s a huge impact to the museum for a day of cars, music, food, and fun in the sun on the square in the beautiful little town of Pontiac, Illinois.”

Our club’s involvement with the museum started in 2014, when we did a Spring Cruise down Route 66, ending at the museum. We then met up with members from the Indianapolis Firebird Club and did a tour of the museum led by curator, Tim Dye. Tim approached me with an idea. He asked if we would consider co-hosting an event with them for Firebirds of all generations the next year – which he dubbed “All Firebird Day at the Museum.”

We just completed our 3rd Annual All Firebird and Trans Am Day at the Museum a few weeks ago, although you could argue we’ve actually been there for four years in a row! And every year we are getting more Firebirds coming from further away, as interest in this Firebird gathering is gaining some serious momentum.

One of the cool things about this event is that it is not just a “car show”, the museum is open the whole time, and special behind the scenes tours are offered, including the new art gallery, which our club helped sponsor last year.

Part of the day’s events include a tour of the private auto collection of Alan Finkenbinder, and a tour the Dongbai Art Studio. The Village of Pontiac provided Trolley service to all of these locations, as well as shuttling our group to Mario’s Pizzeria for a special pizza lunch prepared for the participants.

The museum always provides one or two of their special display Firebirds for us to examine up close. And this year was no exception, as they brought out the 1970 special-color, 433 original-mile, restored Firebird Formula that was featured in the current Smoke Signals magazine, and a real Sportsman-Series 1979 Trans Am race car for all to enjoy.

You should have heard the noise coming from the race car when they actually drove it into place under its own power. It was quite an attention getter!

Being a First Generation Firebird club, this is a wonderful event for us to co-host, to unite all Firebird enthusiasts. We truly enjoy seeing all the years of Firebirds, especially those rare Anniversary and Special Edition Trans Ams and Firehawks, you just don’t see at every car show. The idea behind the show has always been to create a fun event for Firebirds of all generations to celebrate our Pontiac car model, and support the POCI museum. Kind of like a smaller version of the Trans Am Nationals, held in the heart of Illinois. And other than Illinois, we had Firebirds come in from seven different states including, Wisconsin, Indiana, Missouri, Michigan, Iowa, Ohio and even Mississippi!

If you want to be a part of this Firebird get-together next year, mark your calendar now for the 3rd weekend in May. We hope to have even more Firebirds on hand for another wonderful day at the museum.

It was a GREAT event!!

For our third anniversary, we once again increased our participation. The 2016 event saw an increase in older Pontiacs and we certainly had FUN. Yes, it was a beautiful weekend for the Pontiac Adventures driving event.  We had some wonderful comments from couples who enjoyed the event because of all the events they could do together. We had an amazing array of Pontiacs, old and new and we had fun – driving & showing Pontiacs!!!

The start of one of our great tours at the 2016 Pontiac Adventures event. The track at Dells Raceway Park once again proved to be fun to all who participated in this exciting event.  Then on Saturday night we visited Edge Of Dells for burn out action – and you won’t believe the stories!! Just one of our tours staging for a group picture before hot laps at Dells Raceway Park

The tailgate party was well received and we will work to enhance the experience next year with hopefully grills and also lighting under the tents just to mention a few of the improvements we will be working on.

Tours on Friday in 2017 will be at 9:00am, 11:00am and 1:00pm and on Saturday the tours will be 1:00pm, 1:30pm and 2:00pm. Sunday’s tours will depart at the same time to get everyone back in time for that fantastic brunch.

We will have at least one tour stopping at an orchard and all new tours for you to enjoy, both scenic and spirited.  So, drive in next year and experience the best Pontiac show and driving event in the Mid-West, driving on curvy lower Wisconsin roads in the fall with the leaves turning along the roads – what a great way to spent the weekend!!

THERE IS A REASON to be here in 2017- well there are many reasons as we are the ONLY EVENT in the nation with these types of events: Spirited Driving Tours, Scenic Driving Tours, Hot Laps at Dells Raceway Park, Burn outs, Judging.

For 2017, the event will be held on September 15 – 17, 2017 – mark your calendars and come drive with us.

Thanks to all who participated in this record year and next year will be even bigger!!

Though delayed by two weeks due to threatening weather on the original event date, the 2016 NJ Trans Am/All Pontiac Run went off on schedule on its ‘Rain Date.’

There were 13 participants taking part in the Run, and thankfully none of the participants experienced any difficulties with their vehicles, that prevented them from completing the trip from the McDonalds in Edison New Jersey, to Main St in Flemington New Jersey.

Once settled in on Main St, the participants were given some time to look around, and at 6:00 P.M., the ‘Giveaway Items’ (provided courtesy of the National Firebird Trans Am Club), were given out, and the Best Firebird/Trans Am, and Best Pontiac Trophies awarded. Best Firebird went to Bill Vantuono, owner of a1969 Firebird Convertible (see event photos), and Best Pontiac went to Scott Kievning, owner of a 1998 Pontiac GTP.

After the awards were handed out the participants hung out for at least another 2 hours, and then slowly began heading home, with yours truly (Ben Deutschman), leaving at 8:30 P.M.

A GREAT time was had by all, and we all look forward to the 2017 Run.

NOTE: We are now asking for suggestions for a 2017 destination for the NJ 2017 Trans Am – All Pontiac Run, . Please keep in mind that any suggested destination must be able to accommodate 25-40 vehicles, guarantee parking together, be available for a rain date, preferably have food available, and be open on Saturday. It is preferable that the destination be a Cruise Night/Car Show, but that is not a necessary prerequisite.

NJ 2015 Trans Am/All Pontiac Run

NJ 2015 TRANS AM/ALL PONTIAC RUN EDISON NJ TO HOWELL NJ OCTOBER 17, 2015

by Ben Deutschman

Though delayed by 3 months, the NJ 2015 Trans Am/All Pontiac Run finally happened, no rain, not even the tiniest hint of rain.

Thanks to my Co-Chair for this event, Steve Reed, who absolutely went above and beyond, not only helping act as liaison between our contact in the Club that hosts the event we ended our run at, but also having secured Goodie Bags, things to put in those bags, creating and printing ‘People’s Choice’ Ballots for the NJ 2015 Trans Am/All Pontiac Run participants to use in order to vote for their favorite Trans Am and Pontiac, securing additional items for use as ‘Door Prizes’, such as AMES Performance engineering ‘Gift Certificates’, plus creating and funding the VERY nice Dash Plaques for this event Yes, Steve was TREMENDOUS help, and a real asset to this event.

We departed Edison NJ at 2:30 P.M., and had a reasonably uneventful trip down to the Howell NJ Chick-Fil-A Cruise Night, in that NO ONE’S vehicle broke down this time around, unlike last year.

When we arrived at the Chick-Fil-A, were directed to our own parking area, where once settled in, my right hand man Steve, was able to then corral our participants, so as to hand out the Goodie Bags, and where we could then both make sure our participants got their People’s Choice Ballots.

We wrapped things up by around 6:30 P.M., a few of us hung out for a while to shoot the breeze, and by 7:00 P.M. the last of use were on our way home

A successful wrap up, of a successful event, another BIG thanks to the Blue Moon Cruisers for inviting us use their event as our Run destination, and now it’s on to planning our 2016 event.

Thank you very much for the items you sent to us for distribution at the 4th Annual GTOAA Regional All Pontiac Cruise & Show held in Pontiac, Illinois on September 19th and 20th, 20152015 All Ponitiac Show 2015AllPonitiacShowPontiacIL5 2015AllPonitiacShowPontiacIL3 2015AllPonitiacShowPontiacIL2 and benefiting the Pontiac-Oakland Museum and Resource Center. We very much appreciate your support of the museum and were pleased to hand out copies of your club magazine and award the Membership, T-shirt and CD as door prizes. The fact that our event flyer appears in the Eagle helped result in 55 Firebirds on the show-field Sunday and 12 trophies awarded in the four Firebird/TA classes.

This event has grown steadily since its inception in 2012 to participation by 211 vehicles this year and has become the Pontiac-Oakland Museum’s largest single fund-raising event. We are proud to host this event through GTOAA with the Central Illinois and Windy City GTOAA chapters and commend NFTAC and Firebird/TA owners for your participation and support of the only Pontiac-Oakland Museum in existence.

Mark your calendars for the third weekend in September 2016 for the 5th Annual Event and thanks again for your organization’s support.

Pontiacs of Central California Show

Pontiacs of Central California makes its largest ever donation!

This past September, after two years of planning, Pontiacs of Central California (POCC) hosted the 2014 Pontiac/Oakland Western Regional Convention, at Bass Lake, California. This was the third time POCC has hosted the convention, the two previous being in 2005 and 2008. The club voted then to donate 100% of the net proceeds to charity. Both of those efforts resulted in significant donations. Between those two, a total of $14,000.00 was donated to Wish Upon A Star, an organization that grants wishes to children with catastrophic illnesses.

For 2014 the club voted to again donate 100% of the net proceeds to charity. It was decided to split the donation between two charities; Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Central California, and Honor Flight. Honor Flight sends WWII veterans to Washington DC to visit their memorial.

On Thursday December 11th, the club made its largest ever donation, $16,000.00! Our Title Sponsor, Larry Kitahara, owner of Kitahara Buick, Cadillac, GMC of Fresno, generously opened his showroom for the event. He even had it cleared of cars so we could park four classic Pontiacs inside during the ceremony. Also present were our two Co-Title Sponsors; Don Bonander representing Bonander Truck and Trailer Sales of Turlock, and Jerry Fahrney representing The Fahrney Automotive Group of Selma. POCC is extremely fortunate to have three local dealers that are so supportive of us, and their local communities.

The ceremony was opened with remarks by Craig Hansen. Mr. Hansen is the host of Auto Shop Talk, a local radio show, and he generously donated his time to support us. After the opening remarks, POCC was very pleased to present a check for $8,000.00 to Honor Flight. The check was accepted by Mr. Alan Perry, Central Valley Honor Flight Chairman of the Board. The second check for $8,000.00 was accepted by Mrs. Diane Phakonekam, Executive Director of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Central California.

Along with our title sponsors, many of our club members took time off work so they could attend the ceremony. We were pleased that several local TV channels sent their news teams to cover the presentation, and that we made the evening news!

Besides these large donations, over the years POCC has dipped into its treasury to make smaller donations to local groups and events that we could help. All members are very proud of the fact that this brings Pontiacs of Central California’s total charitable donations to well over $30,000.00!

Please visit our website, www.pontiacsofcentralcalifornia.org for more photos and information.

A Pontiac Celebration 2014

Warwick, Rhode Island • September 19-21
by Larry Kummer

Once again, as in 2010 and 2012, Pontiacs from throughout the  Northeast U.S gathered at the Warwick, Rhode Island Crowne Plaza for “A Pontiac Celebration,” proving that although our favorite car is gone, our love and enthusiasm for them is not.

But even more than a celebration of our favorite car, hobbyists again showed their generosity as they gave their time, energy and money to support our two children’s cancer charities– the main reason for the event. . . “Pontiacs with a Purpose!” From the 2010 and 2012 shows, we have donated nearly $16,000 to Alex’s Lemonade Stand foundation for childhood cancer and The Tomorrow Fund helping children and families affected by cancer– and we are happy to announce that 2014 did even better!

Beautiful Pontiacs were rolling in as early as Thursday afternoon, with many more arriving on Friday to participate in our “Teddy Bear Cruise” where all cars of the surrounding area are invited to a party with music, food, and plenty of great cars– nearly 150 strong for a beautiful Fall evening.

Saturday’s show day was full of every type of Pontiac you could wish, with numbers climbing to 220 by the end of registration. We thank all the many Pontiac Clubs from throughout the area for spreading the word about the Celebration, and coming out to show their support. Pontiac people are Great!

The evening brought over 150 people together to visit and enjoy a tasty BBQ dinner followed by awards. There were many fine Pontiacs earning rewards for their hard working owners– congratulations to all. Top honors for capturing the Peoples’ Choice, as well as the Celebration Committee Choice, awards was Jeff Goldstein with a fantastic 1961 Ventura.
